De acuerdo a una nota publicada por el Universal, el consumo excesivo de bebidas de cola puede provocar problemas musculares que van desde debilidad hasta parálisis, debido a que la cola puede causar una reducción peligrosamente baja en el potasio en la sangre, según advierte un nuevo estudio realizado por científicos griegos.
Como ejemplos se da cuenta del caso de un granjero australiano que necesitó de cuidado intensivo por parálisis pulmonar después de beber entre 4 y 10 litros de cola al día. Una vez que se le restringió esta bebida, el paciente logró recuperarse.
También se menciona el caso de una mujer embarazada que consumió regularmente hasta tres litros diarios de refresco de cola durante seis años y se quejaba de debilidad, pérdida de apetito y vómito persistente. Su electrocardiograma reveló que tenía latidos irregulares, probablemente causados por una caída en los niveles de potasio.
El doctor Moses Elisad, del Departamento de Medicina Interna de la Universidad de Ioannina, en Grecia, quien dirigió el estudio, mencionó que:
"Hemos identificado varios problemas de salud como problemas dentales, desmineralización, el desarrollo del síndrome metabólico y diabetes". El consumo excesivo del refresco de cola, afirma, puede conducir a hipocaliemia, un trastorno en el que bajan los niveles de potasio en la sangre, causando un efecto adverso en funciones musculares vitales.
En el estudio, del que da cuenta la BBC Mundo, se menciona que el potasio que se obtiene a través de los alimentos es un mineral que ayuda a los nervios y los músculos a comunicarse, mientras que los riñones se encargan de eliminar el exceso de éste a través de la orina para mantener un equilibrio apropiado del mineral en el cuerpo. Advierte también que un nivel demasiado alto o demasiado bajo de potasio en la sangre puede causar varios trastornos, algunos muy graves.
Estos males, en especial la hipocaliemia, pueden ser causados por el consumo excesivo de los tres ingredientes más comunes en las bebidas de cola: glucosa, fructosa y cafeína.
